18th Century Headwear
A section about hats, wigs, hair accessories and much more! A good resource for ideas for hats and hair design.
18th Century Style Hats
Silk Hat

This hat was originally a simple smaller sized straw hat that I
covered with a tan colored silk. I added a decoration to the inner part of
the hat.
Straw Hat

A straw hat with silk and lace decorations. On the outer rim I was lucky to
find some lace that was circular in pattern and fit the hat perfectly.
Pink Hat

A straw hat covered in pink fabric with decorations.
The flowers are plastic.
Black Hat

This hat was originally a straw hat that I covered with black
fabric. I made a bow, black feathers and a nice paste hat ornament in the
front and a black fabric rose to the back with black lace hanging from it.
Black Tall Hat
These
kinds of hats were primarily worn during the later part of the 18th century
(1790's). I made this hat entirely from scratch using a historical pattern.
I used a type of fabric that is used to make hats and glued the pieces
together. I added fabric and the feathers afterwards. This hat is meant to
be worn with a band of some kind which isn't shown.
Ladies Tricorn Hat

A typical Tricorn hat that is a bit more feminine then the men's version.
Ribbons can be added along with feathers, a black veil and other
decorations! This particular hat is made with black felt and white rabbit
fur that can be purchased at a local sewing shop.
Orange Straw Hat

In the late 18th century these types of balloon hats were very popular. Here
is my version of this type of hat. Antique lace surrounds the brim. The
flowers are silk.
18th Century Style Wigs
The following wigs show examples of styles and settings.
White Wig

The first wig I have attempted to do myself. I styled this wig for a ball
with feathers and ribbons. This is more of a natural romantic style.
I purchased a thinner fake hair wig and used bobby pins to keep the curls in
place. I embellished this wig with feathers, rhinestone barrette in back to
hold up the feathers and two red bows on either side to match my dress.
Rococo Wig

A wig I purchased from another member of my group (Ellinor) In this wig she
uses horse hair to make it fuller and gray spray on the naturally black wig.
Two small braids and big curls held in place with bobby pins..
