18th Century Accessories

During the 18th century a fashionable and practical person would carry around a lot of accessories. These accessories were useful everyday items used for different purposes.

Patch Box and Patches

During the 18th century patches were used to hide unsightly blemishes.

18th Century Fans

18th Century Dutch or French Fan

The most exquisite hand painted French fan in my collection! It is dated to the 1790'S! It is made of pale ivory silk with gorgeous mother of pearl gilded sticks! The buttons that hold on the loop are mother of pearl and measure 1/16". The 9.75" fan is backed with delicate net (probably a later repair). This fan has spangles and sequins outlining hand painted vignettes and embellished tiny hand painted pink roses, vines and leaves! It is an incredibly beautiful fan even though it needs some restoration! The central motif is a courtier and his lady in a garden setting. This rare treasure is enhanced with hand painted gilded scrolls and borders.

Copies of 18th Century Fans

18th Century French Fan

French hand painted fan probably of later construction and in excellent condition with sticks made of ivory and gilt. The base is made of very fine yet strong woven silk. The decorations on the side of the fan are carved into the ivory and gilt You can see the weave of the silk if you look closely. I think the strength of the silk on this fan and the way it was woven is the main reason it has lasted so long and is still in excellent condition.

Both fans are over 100 years old but exact date is unknown.
